AND THE BEAT GOES ON - Chengdu

As Chengdu continues to gain an international reputation for being the beating heart of creativity and culture in Southwest China, local artists and musicians are also gaining more confidence in their own voices on the global stage. 

Here, urban forms of expression take on a distinctly local flavor that is influenced, but not defined, by the early innovators of New York City’s East Village scene in the 1970s and 1980s, the birthplace of modern hip-hop, graffiti, punk rock, and more. By presenting local artists alongside over 78 pieces of original artwork from the early masters of urban art in New York City, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Futura, Daze, Crash, and more, “And the Beat Goes On” explores a wide variety of key players within a new generation of urban artists in Chengdu, and examines their unique contributions to the ongoing rhythms of global youth culture.
